Couldn't think of anything creative for the post title, so there you have it, you get the day of the week.

An interesting aside from wiki...Thursday Etymology: The contemporary name comes from the Old English Þunresdæg, "Thunor's Day"[1][2][3] (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr, meaning "Thor's Day"). Thunor and Thor are derived from the Proto-Germanic god Thunraz, god of thunder, while German Donnerstag is derived from Donar (see Donar Oak)...Oddly appropriate since we've been watching The Vikings on the History Channel. Anyway...

I've been working on a grey fedora today. It's taken me quite some time to sew the ribbon & feather and during this painstaking process, I realized that I'd sewn the sweat band on too high. Because I'll be graded on this one, I'll have to redo it, which makes me a little frustrated. All in all, I'm pleased with it otherwise. It's one I'll be able to wear in the fall and if this overcast weather keeps up, I may just sneak it in before the end of the month. I've probably spent about 5-6 hours on this so far as everything is hand done. I expect I'll spend another 1-2 hours fixing my mistake and sewing the lining.

Hat!

Tomorrow I have to pick up some straw hoods...we were told that a part of our collection must include a straw hat. Would have been nice to have known this the last time I was picking up supplies. Ah well, this will work out just as well since I promised my cousin I'd make her a 'floppy' hat and I'd like one too...and I may as well make a straw fedora for summer...

Anatomy of a Hat

Friday's class was the polar opposite of last week's. I was able to block two hats and begin the finishing process for one of them. Next time I'll post pictures of the block itself and maybe even the blocking process in action...This little number is a hot pink fedora that I'm super excited about finishing. I brought it home to work on over spring break:

And this one is an experiment...I thought the accented angle was adorable, I'm just not sure what it will look like when worn.

Almost there...

Last session of wax carving last night & I feel like I've been working on this piece forever. It's almost there, just needs to be hollowed out and then I'll attach a bail to the back.

And this petit morceau is a ring I carved from leftover wax from the first ring I cast...

An update to the hat...I am sad to report that it was a disastrous situation in millinery class on Friday. My brim was mis-shaped and ended up being 2 inches too large to attach to the crown. My tireless efforts to shrink it were to no avail and I was forced to start on a different project (a hot pink fedora).  More pictures to come later this week.
